Guangdong authorities have given no signs of backing down on polluting industries, the South China Morning Post reported, and 1,000 factories in the province may be ordered to shut down or suspend operations this week. Earlier this year, many factories in the province were notified that their production licences would not be renewed unless they met new safety and environmental requirements. Last week, provincial authorities reaffirmed their commitment to the law and announced the deadline would not be extended because the State Council demanded strict enforcement. Chemical or dangerous substance factories that do not meet the guidelines 45 days after the June 30 deadline will be shut down, the newspaper reported.
