ON Semiconductor of America plans to invest up to US$231m to expand its Sichuanbased joint venture, Leshan-Phoenix Semiconductor, and to become the first foreign company to introduce six-inch wafers to the region, South China Morning Post said. ON Semiconductor and its partner Leshan Radio will first produce advanced metal oxide semiconductor devices, and introduce more sophisticated analogue technologies down to 0.25 microns following the expansion. The Leshan plant produces more than 10bn chips year and claims to be the largest foreigninvested enterprise in Sichuan.
Another US-based company, National Semiconductor, plans to invest US$200m over the next five years in China to build a chip-assembly and test plant, reported CNN.com. The plant will be built in the Suzhou Industrial Park, Jiangsu province, and should be completed in 2004.
