SIMC wins Qualcomm Snapdragon chip order

Semiconductor Manufacturing International (SMIC; 0981.HKG) on Thursday said it had secured orders from Qualcomm (QCOM.NASDAQ) to make chips for the world’s largest supplier of smartphone processors, Bloomberg reported. Shanghai-based SMIC will work with the San Diego-based chip designer to make its Snapdragon processors. Qualcomm will have its marquee smartphone chip made in China as it seeks to tap into the world’s largest mobile market. The move could be a blow to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (2330.TPE), the biggest made-to-order chip foundry, which previously struggled to fill orders and has Qualcomm as its biggest customer.
