Singles’ Day sales

Alibaba Group kicked off direct sales for its annual Singles’ Day shopping festival on Monday, with initial figures, according to the company, surpassing last year’s performance, with more than 30,000 brands doubling their takings from a year earlier. Alibaba has not released total sales numbers for Singles’ Day since 2021.

The initial reports by Alibaba on sales suggest superficially that there is something of a willingness by consumers to spend. But at the same time, Singles’ Day offers major bargains and price cuts on products, and an improvement in sales may alternatively suggest a caution among consumers.

This year’s Singles’ day sales have also been stretched to as long as five weeks for some vendors this year, which indicates that sellers are trying to get as much out of it as they can in spite of the danger of the whole sales idea being diluted over a long period of time.
