Sino-Japanese rift

China's rift with Japan is harming prospects of regional co-operation ahead of a new Asian summit to be attended by Premier Wen Jiabao and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, a senior Chinese diplomat said, reported the South China Morning Post. "Chinese-Japanese relations are unfavorable to advancing Asian regional co-operation," said Cui Tiankai, director-general of the Foreign Ministry's Asian Affairs Department. China objects to the Japanese prime minister's annual visits to the Yasukuni Shrine where war criminals are venerated.
