Six cases of H5N6 avian influenza reported in China's south

Six new cases of H5N6 avian flu have been reported in China, though the virus is not yet able to be transmitted between humans, South China Morning Post reported, citing local media. Three of the cases have occurred in Guangdong, where all three patients had contact with live poultry or visited poultry markets. No person in close contact with any of the patients had tested positive for H5N6, the report said, though one patient has died. The other cases were reported in Sichuan and Yunnan. Guangdong remains problematic for avian flu transmission due to an enduring preference there for freshly slaughtered poultry.
