SMIC founder fined for rule breaking

Bloomberg reported Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp founder Richard Chang, who hails from Taiwan, was fined US$1.23m for breaking the island's rules on investment in the mainland. Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs said Chang had never received government permission to invest in the foundry and was ordered to stop mainland investing. Already concerned that much of its computer industry has moved across the Taiwan Strait, Taipei fears the island's chip industry will be next.
