Snow and freezing weather in Yunnan province in China’s southwest has stranded 20,000 vehicles on highways, Bloomberg reported. About 14,000 kilometers of roads in Yunnan are blocked, affecting 178,000 people. Efforts to clear the roads were hindered by poor equipment and a shortage of funds. The snowfall comes almost two weeks after the worst snow storms in 50 years cut power supplies and transport links for millions of people during the lunar new year holiday. Yunnan authorities have sent food and water to drivers and passengers, transferring some to government shelters or the homes of people who live along the highways. Snow or sleet is forecast in southern China for the next three days.
