The electronics company Sony is to manufacture and sell personal computers in China, the first Japanese firm to do so, Associated Press reported. The company hopes to make 10,000 Vaio notebook computers a month at a factory in Wuxi, Jiangsu province. The plant will import all parts from Japan and its entire output is expected to be sold in China.
Sony also plans to invest in a second phase of its electronic parts manufacturing unit in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, Shanghai Daily News said. The project, due to be completed in 2002, will double Sony’s global production capacity of electronic parts. It expects to sell 20 per cent of the output in China, with the rest going for export.
Third quarter sales up 18 per cent Computer sales in the third quarter of 2001 totalled Yn65.8bn, 12.3 per cent higher than in the second quarter and 18.5 per cent higher than in the same period of 2000, according to statistics reported on CCIDnet.com website. Within total sales, hardware accounted for Yn47.1bn, software for Yn7.9bn and information services Yn10.8bn.
