Sony Corporation plans to open a facility in Shanghai later this year that will design and develop chips used in audiovisual equipment and notebook computers. The Japanese group will co-operate with local universities in the hope that this arrangement will allow it to design and market new products faster.
Another Sony facility in Shanghai plans to increase output of digital cameras for fiscal 2003 to 500,000 units, a 10-fold increase over the projected volume for the previous year. Shanghai Suoguang Electronics will increase production in order to meet growing local demand. Nearly all the units made in Shanghai will be marketed in China.
