South China Morning Post's Chinese social media accounts purged

All of South China Morning Post’s Chinese social media accounts have been purged, Hong Kong Free Press reported. The Hong Kong-based, English-language newspaper’s accounts on Sina’s Weibo and Tencent’s WeChat have been shuttered, with the address redirecting to an error page. Just weeks ago, Chinese leader Xi Jinping made a surprise appearance at Chinese state media bureaus in Beijing, asserting party control over the media, noting that “state media must be surnamed Party.” Last December, Alibaba’s Jack Ma announced he would be buying SCMP, pledging to not interfere with coverage.
