State media accuses Google of playing politics in China

Google (GOOG.NASDAQ) was accused Sunday of playing politics by suggesting the Chinese government supported hacker attacks on the website and by trying to export its own culture, values and ideas, Reuters reported. A commentary run by the official Xinhua News Agency concluded that it “is unfair for Google to impose its own value and yardsticks on internet regulation in China.” The commentary also suggests that Google violates international norms by allowing the proliferation of pornographic, violent and other sensitive content and plays down the impact of the firm’s potential exit. “One company’s ambition to change China’s internet rules and legal system will only prove to be ridiculous,” it says. The US internet firm said in January that it may close its Chinese-language search site, saying it could no longer abide by Beijing’s censorship rules. It also said it had been targeted by computer hacks originating from China. The company is expected to clarify the future of its China operations this week.
