Following on from yesterday’s post about the launch of the (not quite as tub-thumping as you might have expected) Global Times (GT) English-language edition, several people have remarked to me that it looks like a tabloid version of China Daily (CD). There are clear similarities in tone… and also in design. While to a certain extent all newspapers look alike, GT echoes CD somewhat in terms of color schemes/matching, fonts and stylistic arrangement.
Why, you ask? Because they were designed by the same person.
The word on the inside is that CD’s star (foreign) designer became disaffected with the life at the ivory towers (well, dirty white office block) and jumped ship to GT. I had a brief SMS exchange with this designer yesterday…
Me: So… a tabloid version of China Daily…
Him: Hehehe thank you.
Me: There’s probably now a contract out on your life courtesy of CD!
Him: Think so hehehe.
