Strongest typhoon in 50 years displaces 1 million

At least 30 people are dead, three missing and more than one million have been forced from their homes after the strongest typhoon in 50 years slammed into China Thursday. Typhoon Saomai destroyed more than 1000 houses, plunged Zhejiang Province into darkness and knocked out communications, state media reported. The number of deaths may be higher because communications and transportation were down. Typhoon Saomai was first graded a Category 5 "super typhoon" but it was later reduced to a Category 4 when it hit with winds of 135 miles per hour. State media said 20,000 soldiers and militiamen have been deployed on the eastern border to boost the rescue and disaster-relief efforts.
