China's longest submarine electric cable will link Hainan Island to the mainland power grid across the Qiongzhou Straits in Guangdong province.
A total of US$109 million will be invested in the cable and an additional US$206 million will be used to construct a pair of 500kv transformers, one on each side of the 34.7 km sea crossing.
Italy, Norway and Japan have shown interest in investment in the cable, which will augment the existing Hainan power grid, currently producing only 2.8 percent the capacity of mainland generation.
