Supreme Court judge jailed for life

A former Supreme Court judge has been jailed for life for taking bribes and other corruption charges, the BBC reported, citing state-media sources. Huang Songyu was convicted of taking US$570,000 in bribes while he was deputy head of the Supreme Court, as well as embezzling US$170,000 while he was president of a lower-level court in Guangzhou. Huang, who has also been thrown out of the Community Party, is the most senior judge to be convicted for corruption in China. "Huang knowingly violated the law by trading power for money and taking a hefty sum of bribes, which has produced a bad impact on society, and should be punished severely," Xinhua quoted the court verdict as saying.
