Suspects detained for formula fraud

China said it detained 47 people alleged to be responsible for selling phony baby formula which resulted in the deaths of more than 50 babies. Of those detained, 24 were formally arrested. The government recently destroyed 4,425 boxes of counterfeit formula which it said was produced under 45 different brand names in 141 factories nationwide. Officials promised compensation of US$1,200 for each infant who died, according to the reports.
