Global warming and the overuse of the earth’s resources are a concern. One hotel that is actively doing something about it is the Swissôtel Kunshan. It has held a ‘Going Green — Reduce waste now’ at Zhengyang Bridge, the shopping centre of Kunshan city.
The idea was to encourage people to decrease the usage of plastic bags. 800 linen bags were distributed to pedestrians by 25 volunteers from Swissôtel Kunshan and another 400 linen bags will go to guests over the coming weeks.
That is a voluntary effort which coincided with the government banning all supermarkets, department stores and shops from giving out free plastic bags. It has called on consumers to use baskets and cloth shopping bags to reduce pollution.
Rainer Tenius, general manager of the Swissôtel Kunshan, said, ‘The environment and community care is one of the consistent policies of Swissôtel Hotels & Resorts. This event today is to make more people be aware and start to take action from now on! It’s our responsibility to leave a green and healthy earth to our children.’
A Swissôtel Kunshan vulunteer who was giving out bags said, ‘I hope everyone on the spot today will spread the information to their families and friends to use environmental-friendly bags for shopping to avoid using plastic bags.’
