Pudong International Airport will handle all Shanghai’s international flights from October 28 this year. Hongqiao Airport will be left with regional and domestic flights only, reported Shanghai Daily. The move was described as part of a plan to make Pudong airport one of Asia’s busiest aviation hubs.
Last year 6.9m passengers travelled through Pudong, about half of its current capacity. By contrast, the older Hongqiao airport, which is preferred by many because of its proximity to the city centre, struggled to handle 13.8m passengers in 2001.
