Tainted milk seized in Qinghai

Government inspectors in western Qinghai province on July 9 seized some 76 tons of dairy ingredients allegedly tainted with the toxin melamine, state media reported. The confiscated goods consisted of 64 tons of raw dairy products and 12 tons of finished goods apparently destined for Zhejiang province. The products contained 559 times the legal level of melamine. Reports indicate that both the local factory owner and manager have been taken into police custody. The seizure is redolent of the 2008 tainted milk scandal which left six children dead and almost 300,000 people sick.
