Taiwan’s opposition leader said that his party will consider softening its hard-line stance toward Beijing, though he cautioned that he hoped for mainland officials to take a different approach to Taiwan, The Wall Street Journal reported. Su Tseng-chang, chairman of Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party, indicated in an interview that his party is willing to be more “flexible” in its approach to dealing with Beijing as economic ties deepen between the island and mainland. Su also said that he hoped relations would improve under Xi Jinping, who is widely expected to become China’s next president and that Xi would be more tolerant of “ideological differences.” Su added, “As we pursue further economic development and trade flows with China, we must not give up our status as a sovereign nation based on a system of freedom and democracy.”
