Qingyanliu, a village in Yiwu in Zhejiang province, has become Taobao central with thousands of 300-square-meter underground warehouses. From here come the goods supplied to customers buying through Taobao.com, China’s largest online shopping site.
Work starts at 4:00 p.m. when trucks come to be filled up with parcels for Taobao customers.
Liu Wengao, secretary-general of the local e-commerce association, said, "People’s lives here are centered around the business schedule of Taobao. They get up at noon, begin taking orders from all around the country, then express deliveries come to pick up the goods at dusk. Dealers continue their business late into the night."
English People’s Daily reports that this year the total number of online stores rose to 1,800 and the sales volume is expected to reach RMB10 billion (US$1.49 billion).
