Thailand cuts taxes to lure Chinese shoppers

Thailand will slash import taxes on luxury items in a bid to attract wealthy travelers from Asia, Bloomberg reported, citing officials. Somchai Sujjapongse, head of the finance ministry’s Fiscal Policy Office, on Monday said visitors from China were a key target of the plan to lower import duties. The number of visitors from China surged by 62% to 2.8 million in 2012, according to Thai government data. Chinese tourists, who spent US$105 billion overseas in 2012, are forecast to make 94 million trips this year, almost double the level in 2009, according to the China Tourism Academy.
