The Buzz: Measuring the economy, drunk driving, sensitive students and tattooed fish

Notable China-related quotes from the last week:

Jack Ablin, who oversees US$60 billion as chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank in Chicago, on the Shanghai Composite Index’s decline this month: “Anyone who thinks that the Chinese stock market is a barometer for the economy is misguided."

Liang Huiming, the secretary of the Party disciplinary inspection commission in a suburb of Guangzhou, on getting caught driving while intoxicated during the nationwide campaign to crack down on drunk driving: "This is a tough lesson for me."

Song Yuqin, a teacher in Shanghai, on disciplining students: "Some students feel frustrated after being criticized, and this may lead to a runaway from home or even worse tragedies. Some would suffer a devastating blow to their self-esteem, becoming thereafter very reluctant to hold communications with teachers or classmates."

Fish expert Zhang Zhicheng on tattooing tropical parrot fish with decorative symbols: "To use a laser to tattoo will surely affect the fish. It’s like tattooing a human being’s body, it breaks the physiological balance of the fish and damages the skin’s protective surface."
