140 – The number of people reported by state media to have been killed in riots in Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang region
320,000: The number of homes that had to be evacuated in central and southern China due to heavy rains that destroyed houses, flooded roads and damaged a dam. The estimated cost of the damage is $31 million, and least 16 people have died
33.33%: The percentage of China’s total population that will be more than 60 years old in 2050, according to the national aging affairs office
23: The tonnage of liquefied petroleum gas inside a 50-ton rail tanker that fell four meters into a river in Zhejiang province. It continued to leak gas into the river for more than 48 hours
$1.5b: The total amount Chinalco paid to cement its 9.3% share in Rio Tinto. Had Chinalco not purchased the shares, its holdings in its former acquisition target would have decreased from 9.3% to less than 6%
