Three detained for selling contaminated milk powder

Police in Shaanxi province detained three people for producing and selling contaminated milk powder, AFP reported. Liu Ping, general manager of Shaanxi Jinqiao Dairy Company, and two employees – Miao Wenjun and Lu Xiaoqiang – are said to have sold 5.25 metric tons of milk powder contaminated with melamine, the same industrial chemical at the heart of the national dairy scandal in 2008 that killed six infants and sickened 300,000 others. The powder was reportedly purchased by Nanning Yueqian Food Additive Company in Guangxi. State media reports said none of the milk powder sold had reached stores. Two of 21 people convicted for their roles in last year’s scandal were executed in November.
