A Shanghai court has sentenced three dairy firm executives to prison terms of three and five years for their roles in the production and sale of melamine-tainted dairy products, state media reported. All three sentenced were senior managers of Shanghai Panda Dairy, which has since been shut by the authorities. They were found guilty of knowingly making milk flavoring with melamine-tainted condensed milk "to reduce economic losses." The condensed milk had been returned to a dealer in the aftermath of the 2008 milk scandal but was not destroyed. Of the 3,280 cans of tainted condensed milk sold, 94% were recalled. Minister for Health Chen Zhu said China is "striving" to set up a national food safety system but would not elaborate.
