Toshiba Corporation said it plans to set up a factory in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, to make mobile handsets from as early as January. The Japanese group had formed a global partnership with Siemens to make third-generation phones, but the delayed roll-out of 3G services persuaded Toshiba to go it alone with current-generation CDMA handsets.
Earlier in November, two other Japanese companies, NEC Corp and Matsushita Communication Industrial, announced that they were considering jointly developing 3G handsets in China.
