US President Donald Trump is considering imposing another round of tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports as soon as the public comment period ends next week, six sources told Bloomberg News.
If they are applied, the 25% tariffs on $200 billion worth of goods would mark a significant escalation of the trade war between the United States and China. Each side has currently imposed tariffs on around $50 billion of each other’s imports. The latest tariffs would also likely have a much more visible impact on consumers, with products set to affected including home building supplies, electronics devices, bicycles and clothing.
According to Reuters, Trump has not made his final decision on what to do after the public comment period expires on September 6, and officials within the administration remain divided over how hawkish they should be toward China.
