US President Donald Trump told Chinese President Xi Jinping that the US’s growing trade deficit with China is not sustainable during a phone call between the two leaders Monday, Bloomberg reports.
Trump also “expressed disappointment” with the state of trade relations between the two countries during the call, according to a White House statement released Tuesday.
The two leaders found more common ground during a discussion of the North Korea situation, with both expressing hope that negotiations “might prompt a change in North Korea’s destructive behavior,” the statement said. Trump urged Xi to exert “maximum pressure” on Pyongyang to halt its nuclear program.
According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, Xi told Trump that the two sides should work together to solve trade and economic disputes.
