Trump to meet Xi ‘sometime in March’ as trade talks continue

The two presidents will hold a summit next month, according to a US Department of Agriculture official, after the trade truce’s March 1 expiration date, Reuters reports.

Trump previously said that a meeting with his Chinese counterpart will be necessary in finalising any resolution to the ongoing dispute, but earlier this week ruled out the possibility that this will happen before the deadline.

US officials are currently in Beijing for the latest round of top-level negotiations. The pressure is on to find some form of agreement in order to avoid the more than doubling of tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods next month.

Speaking to reporters, the President said that the White House has a “big team of people, very talented people, over in China right now, negotiating on the China deal.”
