Tsinghua now a trademark

[photopress:tsinghua.jpg, full, alignright]If you have an MBA from Tsinghua University you have something very special which cannot be duplicated. For Tsinghua is the first Chinese university to see its name appear on a list of famous Chinese trademarks.

106 famous trademarks appear in the list released by the State Administration of Industry and Commerce (SAIC) on its website.

The SAIC ruling means that the name ‘Tsinghua University’ or ‘Tsinghua’ can only be used in fields related to education and training. No enterprise or commodity can use ‘Tsinghua’ in their names without authorization. So no one will be able to start the Tsinghua Correpondence Degree School, no previous experience required, life experience taken into account.

Indeed, earlier this month, two publishing companies in Beijing were fined a total of RMB300,000 ($37,500) for using Tsinghua, without prior approval, in the title of books they published in 2005. Other universities will no doubt be added to the protected list.
