A court in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, has upheld the decision of a lower court to award Yn25m in compensation to 230 workers who contracted silicosis after working on a road construction project in Liaoning province in 1993, Reuters reported. The workers, mostly farmers from Taishun county, near Wenzhou in Zhejiang province, were among some 400 workers employed by the Taishun County Tunnel Engineering Co to work on the Wujialing Tunnel of the Shenyang-Benxi Highway. They were not given any protective equipment when drilling through rock with a high silicon dioxide content, the inhalation of which can lead to silicosis.
Two officials of the company, a sub-contractor on the project, have already been sentenced to prison for their negligence.
