Typhoon kills more than 100

Chinese vessels rescued hundreds of Vietnamese fishermen cast into the sea by Typhoon Chanchau but 37 were killed. Earlier, the typhoon killed 23 people in China and 41 in the Philippines. The full force of the typhoon hit Vietnamese vessels, caught off guard when the typhoon unexpectedly changed course. Some vessels were caught as far as 1,000 kilometers offshore. State media reported the rescue operation by Chinese vessels, which saw 330 people rescued from the high seas, was the largest ever at sea by that country. News of who had been killed, who was missing or who had been rescued were still difficult to sort out Monday as families of Vietnamese fishermen waited for details and hundreds were still declared missing.
