Huawei Technologies’ major role in Britain’s telecommunications sector has made the country increasingly vulnerable to cyber security risks from China, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing the UK Parliament’s security watchdog. The report released Thursday by the Intelligence and Security Committee cited a “shocking” failure on the UK government’s part to adequately monitor the Chinese telecom company’s activities, adding that reactions to cyber attacks have been “feeble at best.” With alleged links between Huawei and the Chinese government, this is not the first time the company has encountered political opposition. The EU is currently investigating whether China is providing unfair subsidies to Huawei, and in the US, Huawei deals are effectively blocked because of security concerns.
