A claim by China Unicom that the CDMA mobile telephone standard is safer than GSM prompted a complaint
by the GSM Association. China's second largest mobile operator had been promoting its
CDMA services as a lower-radiation alternative to GSM, although the group actually sells on
both networks. China Unicom's head of group marketing told the Financial Times that the
company would promote safety issues because of greater public concern about health
matters since the Sars outbreak.
The GSM Association, which represents operators that
use the GSM standard, said it was unhelpful for anyone to suggest there were any risks
associated with handset use. However, it had no plans to make a legal challenge to
Unicorn or complain to the Chinese government.
