China Unicom is to test a system designed to link the world's two biggest cellular standards – global system for mobile communications (GSM) and code-division multiple access (CDMA). The two standards are currently incompatible but Qualcomm Inc, the US developer of CDMA, will supply test equipment to Unicom's office in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, reported Bloomberg.
A link would enable GSM carriers to use Qualcomm's technology to offer high-speed services such as video-conferencing. The trial period would take only a month, said Ju Zhenguo, manager of the Suzhou office.
