UPS has officially opened a new international hub in Shanghai, China.
It is at Pudong International Airport and will link all of China via Shanghai to UPS’s international network.
It will also connect points served in China through a dedicated service by Chinese all-cargo airline Yangtze River Express.
The Shanghai hub will also be connected to its intra-Asia air hub at the Clark Air Force in the Philippines, which is scheduled to be relocated to Shenzen, China in southern China in 2010.
UPS broke ground on the Shanghai hub in 2006 when China became part of the WTO, UPS had to operate through Sinotrans, a Chinese service partner.
When it became wholly-owned in China in late 2005, UPS quickly embarked on an expansion plan that included the Shanghai hub.
The Shanghai hub has 117 conveyor belts, 47 docking bays, and a sorting capacity of 17,000 pieces per hour.
Other features of the hub include:
- A collaboration with Shanghai Customs to deploy a customs risk management system which minimizes unnecessary checks and expedites shipment clearance for delivery to recipients;
- An IT system at its dedicated customs area comprised of automated import and export inspection geared to increase overall package flow efficiency;
- A ‘Shipper Build Area’ at the General Cargo Handling Area that enables customers to perform on-site packaging before goods are loaded onto aircraft, as well as eliminating the practice of processing goods at a separate facility.
