The attack that killed 31 people in an Urumqi market last Thursday highlighted failings in the Chinese security network, The Wall Street Journal reported. Despite a continuous stream of attacks in the restive Xinjiang region, Chinese counter-terrorism efforts tend to rely on hard security measures when more nuanced tactics are needed. The attack took place even as Urumqi was under a heightened state of alert following a bombing and knife attack carried out at the city’s main train station less than a month ago.
