Urumqi attack exposes Chinese intelligence failings

The attack that killed 31 people in an Urumqi market last Thursday highlighted failings in the Chinese security network, The Wall Street Journal reported. Despite a continuous stream of attacks in the restive Xinjiang region, Chinese counter-terrorism efforts tend to rely on hard security measures when more nuanced tactics are needed. The attack took place even as Urumqi was under a heightened state of alert following a bombing and knife attack carried out at the city’s main train station less than a month ago.
