Chicken and pork imports from seven US companies, including Tyson Foods, the world's largest meat processor, have been banned by the Chinese government, the Financial Times reported. The move has been described as a response to recent scrutiny of Chinese exports by US regulators, which saw recalls of various products, notably toys, seafood and tires. In the most high-profile criticism yet, US Commerce Secretary Carlos Guttierez said China had to do more to ensure the safety of its exports. Later the same day, China's food safety administration said it had found salmonella, feed additives and residue from an anti-parasite drug in US-made chicken and pork products. Imports from the offending companies have been suspended for 45 days. Beijing has also suspended exports by 42 domestic producers, 17 of which sell to the US.
