China is set to overtake Japan as the third-biggest export market for the US but the news was delivered by a top Commerce Department official who then began pushing for wider access, the Wall Street Journal Reported. During a four-day visit, Franklin Lavin, US undersecretary of commerce for international trade, will focus on financial services and how China can open its doors wider. The visit comes in the wake of almost 37% growth in exports from the US to China in the first five months of 2006 from a year earlier. If the growth rate continues, the US will soon be exporting more to China than to Japan, although Canada and Mexico will remain the two largest export markets.
