US company wins new contracts

UTStarcom Inc of the US won four Chinabased orders worth more than US$100m in late October and early November. In the largest deal, it signed a contract worth US$53m to supply equipment for use in China Telecom's personal access system in two southwest Chinese cities. It also signed a US$35m contract with China Netcom, which operates fixed-line networks in northern China.

In a separate development, China Netcom awarded a US$36m contract to Aleatel Shanghai Bell to supply a new switching network that will enable it to provide nationwide coverage.
