The US government is worried about China’s advancing capacity to interfere with sensitive US satellites used by intelligence agencies and the military, as Beijing continues to develop its presence in space, Reuters reported, citing US government sources and private space experts. A classified US intelligence report drafted late last year assessed China’s expanding space activities and set out the increasing vulnerability of US satellites to Beijing anti-satellite technology, said the sources. The US satellites at risk include those that detect enemy missile launches, allow for classified military communications and provide targeting coordinates, the sources said. US officials consider China’s latest anti-satellite moves a part of a wider military modernization strategy, and, as a result, Washington is monitoring Chinese activities that could interfere with US satellites. Specifics of the most recent Chinese moves that have heightened US concerns have not been disclosed.
