US Defense Secretary Gates arrives in Beijing for talks

US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates arrived in Beijing Sunday for the beginning of a three-day visit with senior Chinese officials, Bloomberg reported. Gates will meet with his Chinese counterpart, Liang Guanglie, as well as President Hu Jintao and General Xu Caihou, the vice chairman of the Central Military Commission. Gates said he hopes the visit will lead to more stable defense relations between the US and China. "My hope is that this visit will strengthen what I think both presidents believe is an underdeveloped part of the relationship," Gates said. His visit comes ahead of a planned state visit by Hu Jintao to Washington later this month.
