Aiming to defuse recent reports that Washington sees China as a rising economic and military threat, Deputy US Secretary of State Robert Zoellick, who is in China for the first of a series of strategic talks aimed at improving strained Sino-US relations, said he had "very open" discussions with the Chinese leadership, according to media reports. Zoellick said one of Washington's objectives is to "integrate China into the world security, economic and political system".
