A US intelligence report released Monday said that China will be the world’s largest economy by 2030 but is unlikely to overtake the US as the world’s leader on global issues, Reuters reported. The National Intelligence Council’s report, “Global Trends 2030: Alternative Worlds,” also predicted that Asia will overtake North America and Europe in global power by 2030, a measure determined by examining GDP, population, military spending and technological investment. It additionally stated that “the economies of Europe, Japan and Russia are likely to continue their slow relative declines.” The report, the fifth of a series whose last iteration was published in 2008, aims to encourage strategic thinking rather than to predict the future. Such reports are released every election year to offer insights on global trends to new administrations.
