US labor group to visit China

The AFL-CIO, the largest US trade union group, said it had accepted an invitation by Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi to visit China and inspect labor conditions. The group's president said that he hoped to head a labor union mission to China as early as August. Wu extended the invitation during her trade mission to the US in April. The AFL-CIO previously submitted a petition to the Bush administration alleging that China treated workers unfairly and kept their wages artificially low in order to make their exports more competitive globally. The petition, which was rejected by the Bush administration, called for punitive tariffs on Chinese products.
