US panel warns China on toy safety

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said Chinese toy makers should expect to be hit with more recalls in the US until they do better at eliminating safety defects, the Wall Street Journal reported. CPSC head Inez Tenenbaum plans to visit China later this month to warn Chinese manufacturers prior to the upcoming holiday shopping season in the US. "We will continue to recall their products and it will damage the brand," she said. "There will be penalties, there will be lost customers." Chinese firms currently manufacture 80% of the toys sold in the US market. Some Chinese-made toys have been the subject of large recalls in recent years due to unsafe levels of toxic substances like lead and cadmium. Tenenbaum said one goal of her trip is to establish what specific steps Chinese regulators will take to ensure enforcement is carried out effectively.
