America’s global dominance will remain unchallengeable for at least two decades, a top Chinese official wrote in an essay that urged Beijing to strike a balance between assertion and restraint, Reuters reported. Le Yucheng, director-general of policy planning for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the remarks prior to Chinese President Hu Jintao’s state visit to the US last week. Le’s essay, published in the Foreign Affairs Review – a Chinese-language publication overseen by his ministry, which reached subscribers on Monday – reflects Hu’s efforts last week to both reassure Washington while pressing Beijing’s own complaints. Le argued that while the aftershocks of the global financial crisis are hastening a "historic transformation in the international balance of power," China must not cast itself as an emerging peer or challenger of the US and the advanced West.
